What Is Eczema?
What is Eczema
So What is Eczema ? You may ask, eczema is a fairly common skin disease. It’s basically an inflammation of the skin that causes the skin to become dry, rough, red, and itchy In people with eczema the skin tends to overact and become sensitive and irritated by the slightest of objects, ex clothes, soap, lotion, food, (these are called triggers.) In the early stage of an eczema outbreak you may experience redness, blister, rashes and oozing puss. In the later stages these areas will turn brown and scaly.
Eczema affects people of all backgrounds and ages however is predominately seen in children and young adults. Eczema can also be found anywhere on the body however in infants eczema is mostly found on the areas of the forehead, cheek, legs, forearm, neck and scalp. As these infants grow eczema will either go away, become milder, or show up on the face, neck, in side of the elbow, inside of the leg, knees and ankles. Eczema will look different in all sufferers in some it may appear with severe redness and oozing bumps and rashes whereas in others it will appear more dry and scaling possibly without the bumpiness. Either way with constant itching overtime the skin will appear rough and leather-like.
In most cases eczema will come and go often based on external factors. Eczema is not contagious and unfortunately is not curable, however most cases in infants and toddlers tend to clear with time. It can also be almost non-existent with the proper removal or avoidance of some of the triggers that initiate it .
If you or a loved you thinks you may have eczema a pediatrician, dermatologist, or your primary care provider can make a diagnosis. Many people with eczema also suffer from allergies you doctor may perform allergy tests to determine possible irritants or triggers.
