Do You Have Scalp Eczema?
Scalp eczema is amongst one of the most common forms of eczema. This type of eczema doesn’t appear to affect any one person over another, it could start as young as newborn or occur later in adulthood, there’s also no preference to sex, it affects man and women equally. As you are probably aware eczema can affect all parts of your body however scalp eczema is a little different, because the skin on the scalp is different. This uniqueness is generally what causes eczema to be so common on the scalp.
There are several things that can contribute to scalp eczema the main being the uniqueness of the skin on the scalp which has oil producing sebaceous glands which produce quite a bit oil, this is then magnified by the fact that hair follicles produce even more secretions. Environmental factors also play a huge role in scalp eczema, and eczema in general. Factors such as heat, direct sunlight and cold dry winter can have a major affect on your scalp eczema.
Scalp eczema can typically be broken down into to two categories and that is environmental and internal. Environmental eczema would includes things such as allergic contact eczema, herpericum eczema, and irritant eczema. The other category would be internal eczemas which includes things such as seborrheic , nummular, atopic, and asteototic, to name a few.
Though many of these different types of eczema can be found on the scalp the predominate form found is a condition called seborrhoeic dermatitis. Seborrhoeic dermatitis can cause itching, inflammation and irritation. With this condition you normally will notice it loosens oily scales of skin off the scalp that flake off. Actually you may be familiar with seboorhoeic dermatitis in its more common term “dandruff” Remember that 80’s Head and Shoulders commercial?
Some of the most common symptoms of eczema of the scalp are inflamed, itchy red scalp. Covering the scalp you will normally see oily yellowish scales that can flake off. You may also see this same condition in the eyebrows or behind the ears. It is unknown what causes scalp eczema some dermatologists would suggest that it is a hormonal balance whereas others contend it is caused by a fungus.
Whatever the case may be scalp eczema can be a very annoying condition to deal with not just the itching and flakes but also the embarrassment of the appearance of flakes that can occur with this condition. For more information on fighting eczema be sure to check out Eczema Free
