Causes of Eczema

At the onset of my childrens’ eczema I, like many people, was unsure as to what could have caused it, however through much research I found that eczema is normally caused by either hereditary or external triggers or a mixture of both.

In my children’s case it was hereditary passed down by me. Even though I never had a severe case and was only haunted by an occasional patch of dry skin every other year. I didn’t think I was a carrier and never thought it was eczema. But I was immediately put in my place when I took my son to the dermatologist and she informed me that the patch above my eye that wouldn’t go away for months was probably eczema and I was the one who probably passed it down to my children. I also learned that if both parents have this disease there is an 80% chance your children will acquire it. How’s that for odds.

The other most common cause of this skin disease is external and environmental triggers. In this case eczema is not inherited from your parents but the allergic reaction of certain foods that you digest can cause the skin to itch and become irritated. Even items that we don’t eat like pollen in the air, can cause an eczema flare up. Or even worse the clothes we put on our body or the detergent we wash them in.

Ok I kind of created this category I say a mixture of both because even though your eczema may have been passed down from a parent that doesn’t mean that food allergies won’t also trigger an outbreak. It really doesn’t matter what caused eczema, once you have it you need to mindful of what triggers a flare-up so that you can work to avoid them.

If you or a loved has eczema that has gone untreated the best thing you could do is go to a doctor and find out exactly what the causes of eczema are for your specific case. Every one’s skin but if you speak with a specialist together you may realize some what your eczema trigger are.

If you’re like me and my children and you find the medication you’re given only works temporarily or not at all then I suggest you read Beat Eczema. It changed our life and I hope it will do the same for you.
